Invest in Yourself

안녕하세요, family and friends. Today, we will talk about the importance of self-care when God delays our journey and how to best invest in yourself.

This might be a timely post since most of us may still be at home in lockdown or quarantine, and it would be beneficial to use our time well. At the same time, delays from God doesn’t have to mean the certain situation we find ourselves in right now. It can also be the rejections that we acquired from job interviews, universities, publishing companies, or the last person you asked to be your romantic partner.

It is important to first accept that our journey has been delayed for a good reason. Maybe, there was a better job offer about to open up. Or maybe, we would grow and be more successful choosing a different course in a different university. Maybe, that publishing company would not be able to give us the kind of deal that would be best for our book. And maybe that person said ‘no’ because we needed to complete ourselves first.

Self-care is not just about our physical appearance or mental health, it also comprises of our spiritual health.

How is your faith these days?

As days passed, I become more and more accepting of the notion that our spiritual health coincides with our mental and physical health. No matter how sane or how physically fit we think we are, we won’t be fully complete without faith. Some people have faith in one God, some in multiple Gods, and some in the Universe. But no matter how we look at it, one way or another, we have to have faith in something to ensure no spiritual deaths.

So, what do we need to do in our time of waiting? What do I mean by investing in yourself? And how do we go about doing that?

Investing in yourself means we have to sit down and take time to really go through the things that we want to achieve in life. And do these things coincide with God’s will?

One of the surest ways to self-care is by looking after your spiritual self.

Open your arms back to the faith you grew up in, or if you’ve never had a faith, choose one and stick to it. Your faith is what’s going to help you in everything you do.

For instance, in Catholicism, prayer and action is everything. Through personal communications with God, where we pray or request for information, and a little push to do what needs to be done for the day, God always gives guidance. Just ask and you will receive.

But even now, I know that whatever you will request from God, God will give to you.”

John 11:22 CPDV

The next step now is to take care of your physical and mental health.

How can we do that? There are actually a huge variety of things we can do and the list I’m going to provide you below are just some of the things I have tried myself. So, do not limit yourself to this list.

  • A Healthy Diet – I’m sure you all know this would be at the top, but sometimes we have to be reminded
  • Stay HYDRATED – it’s not a secret that our bodies are made up of mostly fluids, and everyday as our bodies function they secrete wastes that are more or less also in the form of fluids. So, whenever we don’t drink enough our bodies also function insufficiently.
  • Get that 8 hours of Sleep!! – now for this point I will let my good friend Matt Walker explain it in this TED Talk (Matt Walker: Sleep is your superpower) for I believe he does a great job at doing so.
  • E X E R C I S E – Each person has their own body type and, although our bodies generally function the same, the metabolic rates may differ. This means that whatever type of exercise works for your friends doesn’t necessarily mean it can work for you, and vice versa. So, how do we get around that?
    • Personally, I went through trial and error before I really got to know the science behind an effective exercise regime. In the end, I opted to try Yoga initially. I only used an app to start but since I’ve bought a new phone I couldn’t find the old app I used. So, I’ve been utilising Youtube – Yoga With Adriene. I’ve also tried apps like Yoga for Beginners but it only has one plan free and most are for Premium users. If you think Yoga isn’t for you there is also this 30 Day Fitness Challenge. It has different focus and you can choose which part of your body you’d want to exercise for certain days.

  • Meditate – a minute or two of complete silence, only focusing on your breathing, or your other senses, such as the sounds you hear or things you touch. This activity encourages the mind to concentrate on one thing at a time, which helps in disciplining the mind.
  • Following CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – this is actually use as an intervention for a variety of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and substance use disorders. I understand that some may not be comfortable using this technique but it is effective even when you do it on your own. Although, it may be best to see a professional for those whose mental health are more complex. You can read more on the main mechanics of CBT here to – CBT Techniques
  • Use Affirmations – I personally recite the affirmations below to myself in the mornings, and it helps get my mind into a positive state preparing me for the day. If you have pinterest and are interested for more affirmations you can follow this board New Mantra – AJ Remigio Jr.
